About the author

Anna Sewell (1820–1878) was born and raised in England. Injured at a young age, she often relied on horse-drawn carriages, which led to her passion for horses and her belief in treating animals humanely. She wrote Black Beauty, her only published work, hoping to raise awareness of the ill-treatment of horses.
