About the author


Benjamin Jowett (1817-1893), a theological and classical scholar, was one of the most influential British educators of the 19th century. Born in London, he became Master of Balliol College, Oxford. He was a prolific translator of the ancient Greek philosophers and historians, and won renown among his students as a tutor of Greek.
