Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an important American writer, journalist, and critic.  His short stories and poetry introduced a distinctive vein of macabre psychological horror to American and world literature, and is generally credited with inventing the modern detective story.  His works aided in the transition from the popularity of the gothic to the science fiction genre. Poems like ‘The Raven’ and short stories such as ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ have assured his immortality.
