Henry Handel Richardson is the pseudonym for Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson, an esteemed Australian novelist born on January 3, 1870, in East Melbourne, Victoria. Richardson’s pen name was chosen to mask her gender at a time when female writers were often subject to prejudice and to honor her brother, whose name was Henry. Richardson pursued musical studies at the Presbyterian Ladies’ College in Melbourne, an experience that greatly influenced her literary work and understanding of cultural aesthetics. After her father’s death, Richardson moved with her mother and sisters to Europe in 1886 to continue her education in music in Leipzig, Germany. It was in Leipzig that she met her future husband, J. G. Robertson, a fellow student and later a prominent German literature scholar.
