It is a collection of four essays first published in the journal Imago (1912–13): ‘The Horror of Incest’, ‘Taboo and Emotional Ambivalence’, ‘Animism, Magic and the Omnipotence of Thoughts’, and ‘The Return of Totemism in Childhood’.
