About the author

Francis Marion Crawford (1854–1909) was an American novelist who set many of his works in Italy, the country of his birth, where he resettled as an adult. He combined realism and romanticism, and thought of the novel as ‘a marketable commodity.’ Crawford is also noted for his classic weird stories of fantasy. In the town of Sant’ Agnello di Sorrento, where he died, a street is named after him.
