Alexander Wheelock Thayer (1817-1897) is widely regarded as one of the foremost biographers of the famed composer Ludwig van Beethoven. Born in South Natick, Massachusetts, Thayer was not initially a music historian. His early career started in law; however, his profound interest in Ludwig van Beethoven’s music and life led him to abandon his law practice and devote himself to meticulous biographical research (Anderson, 1983). Thayer’s multi-volume work ‘The Life of Ludwig van Beethoven’ volumes 1 through 3, first published between 1866 and 1879, represents a cornerstone in Beethoven scholarship. His commitment to factual accuracy and the use of primary sources marked a departure from earlier biographical accounts that often contained romanticized and unfounded anecdotes (Forbes, 1967). Thayer’s magnum opus, rich in scholarly rigor, esteems him as the pioneering figure in Beethoven studies.
