Weng Quanhai, a descendant of Menghe Medical School, is a doctor and a Confucian scholar who has a strong sense of justice and is always ready to help the weak. Weng was a frank and forthright person skilled in traditional Chinese medicine, and quickly became famous in Shanghai. However, he was envied and crowded out by his peers. As the Western learning was gradually introduced to China, the traditional Chinese medicine industry was under pressure. The National Government has made it worse by initiating the Act of Abolishing Old Chinese Medicine. At the critical moment, in order to protect the national treasure of traditional Chinese medicine, Weng stepped forward and resolutely led his Chinese medicine colleagues to appeal in Nanjing for help. After Shanghai’s occupation by the Japanese, the Japanese special agent authorities forced Weng and his peers to develop secret drugs for diarrhea. The Kuomintang special agents secretly sneaked into the Japanese medical institute where Weng was working and got in touch with him. Thus Kuomintang was able to save many Chinese expeditionary soldiers by obtaining the prescriptions and information and intercepting the precious medicine from the Japanese. The head of the Japanese spy suspected that Weng had leaked secrets and ordered to hunt him down. This work has seven medical cases as the main clue and shows the magnificent and turbulent social life of Shanghai during the Republic of China while promoting the traditional Chinese medical ethics and exposing the ugly faces of quack doctors.
