There’s an imposter amongst us…’The Fortunes of Perkin Warbeck’ (1857), is ‘Frankenstein’ author Mary Shelley’s fictionalised account of Perkin Warbeck, the 15th century pretender to the English throne. Backed by a band of loyal Yorkists, Warbeck rose up against King Henry VII, claiming to be Richard, Duke of York and rightful heir to the English crown.The novel follows Warbeck’s adventures across Europe and England as he attempts to take back what is rightfully his. The character of Perkin is thought to be based on Shelley’s husband, the poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley.-
