Robert Ervin Howard (1906–1936) was an American author of pulp fiction, who is best known for his character Conan the Barbarian and is regarded as the father of the sword and sorcery subgenre. Howard was born and raised in Texas, where the vast open spaces, history of the Southwest, and various historical texts at his disposal nurtured his imagination for narrative and adventure. He spent most of his life in the town of Cross Plains, with excursions to nearby Brownwood. A bookish and intellectual child, Howard was also passionate about boxing and history.
