Henry Scougal (1650–1678) was a Scottish theologian, minister, and author, renowned for his devotional classic ‘The Life of God in the Soul of Man’ (1677), which continues to influence Christian thought and practice. Scougal was born in Leuchars, Fife, Scotland, and was the son of Patrick Scougal, the Bishop of Aberdeen. He displayed profound intellectual capacities from a young age, entering the University of Aberdeen at age fourteen. After completing his studies, he became a Professor of Philosophy at King’s College, Aberdeen, at the remarkably young age of twenty. Scougal’s literary output, though limited in quantity, is marked by its depth and spiritual insight. His writing is characterized by a blending of the mystical and the practical, where the pursuit of a godly life is central.
