Published in 1900, this popular novel was the first of Bacheller’s books to focus on upper New York State.  Here a young orphan, Willie Brower, is adopted by the old woodcutter Eben Holden and the story follows their struggle to survive.  Willie grows to be a journalist, join the Union Army, and fight in the Battle of Bull Run.

Irving Bacheller (1859-1950) was an American journalist and novelist who founded the first modern newspaper syndicate.  His bestselling novels, many of which were set in the North Country of New York State in the early days of the United States, include “D’ri  and I, ” (1901), Darrel of the Blessed Isles (1903), and The Harvesting (1934).
