Jane Porter (1776-1850) was a Scottish novelist who helped to popularize the historical novel in such works as Thaddeus of Warsaw (1803) and The Scottish Chiefs (1810). During her time her work was controversial and The Scottish Chiefs was banned by Napoleon in France.
