George Orwell
Clergyman’s Daughter

Ondersteuning
Dorothy’s father was Rector of St Athelstan’s, Knype Hill, a small town in East Anglia. Her father was a disagreeable and widowed clergyman who enjoyed torturing his daughter and maids. Under her father’s strict discipline, Dorothy was a devout believer since childhood and practiced self-restraint. However, she made friends with Mr. Warburton, a notorious prodigal in the town, because of her loneliness. One evening she was invited to dinner by Mr. Warburton. He attempted to seduce Dorothy. When he forced another embrace on her, they were seen by Mrs. Semprill, the village gossip and scandal-monger. Dorothy returned home and fell asleep. When she woke up again, she found herself inexplicably in a strange town and lost her memory of who she was, where she came from and why she was here. What Dorothy didn’t know was that the rumors of her running away was being published in newspapers all over Britain, and her own life and belief were about to undergo a tremendous change.
