Sidney Lanier
The English Novel (Barnes & Noble Digital Library)
A Study of the Development of Personality

Ondersteuning

Published posthumously in 1897, this collection of lectures traces the development of human personality and prose from the time of Aeschylus to the present, identifying a consistent trend toward greater individuality.  Lanier’s thesis is that the novel, of all literary forms, best exemplifies individuality, which is why it has become the paramount literary form.
