Daniel Garrison Brinton (1837–1899) was an accomplished American archaeologist and ethnologist, whose scholarly pursuits primarily centered on the study of Indigenous cultures of the Americas. Earning his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in 1860, Brinton’s diverse career path included practicing medicine during the Civil War, editing a medical journal, and eventually delving into the rich world of Native American languages and cultures. Emphasizing the importance of linguistic and cultural studies, Brinton became a leading figure in the field of Americanist studies, serving as a professor of ethnology and archaeology at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia.
