Earl Derr Biggers (1884–1933) was an American novelist and playwright, most renowned for his creation of the fictional Chinese-American detective Charlie Chan. Born in Warren, Ohio, Biggers graduated from Harvard University in 1907 before embarking on a career in journalism. He worked for 'The Plain Dealer’ in Cleveland and 'The Boston Traveler’ where he honed his literary skills. Biggers’s transition to full-time authorship came with the publication of his first novel, 'Seven Keys to Baldpate’ in 1913, which garnered considerable success and was later adapted into plays and films. His foray into the mystery genre was galvanized by the popularity of this work. However, it was his novel 'The House Without a Key’ (1925), introducing the wise and calm detective Charlie Chan, which solidly established him in the literary world.
