Ian Maclaren is the pen name of the Reverend John Watson (1850–1907), a Scottish author and theologian famed for his sentimental and homely tales. Educated at the University of Edinburgh and later at the Free Church College, he was ordained as a Free Church minister. Before gaining literary fame, Maclaren served as a pastor in various parishes, which heavily informed the pastoral themes and characterizations within his works. His book ‘The Days of Auld Lang Syne’ (1895) is a collection of stories that epitomize his mastery in capturing the essence of Scottish rural life.
