Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The point he made was overwhelming and unanswerable, and reluctantly I began the work of preparing the material for publication. I at first resolved to classify the memoranda under the headings of a course of twelve lectures on Japan given before the Lowell Institute of Boston in the winter of 1881 — 82.
