The book was originally Hu Shi’s doctoral dissertation, The Evolutionary History of Ancient Chinese Philosophical Methods, which was written during the period when he was studying at Columbia University in the United States. In 1917, he compiled it into handouts for teaching The History of Chinese Philosophy at Peking University.There are 12 articles and more than 100, 000 characters in the book.
