Er schrieb eine Vielzahl spannender Abenteuerromane, die sofort ungemein populär, in viele Sprachen übersetzt und zum Teil auch verfilmt wurden. Das Geschehen in seinen Büchern kreist häufig um geheimnisvolle Orte oder sagenumwobene Gegenstände wie etwa einen geheimen Raum mit der Leiche eines Verschollenen in ›Königsmark‹ oder dem heiligen Gral in ›Montsalvat‹.
