Robert Ervin Howard (1906–1936) was an American author of pulp fiction, who significantly shaped the genre of sword and sorcery with his creation of the character Conan the Barbarian. Born in Peaster, Texas, Howard spent most of his life in the town of Cross Plains. A prolific writer, Howard’s works span a variety of genres, including fantasy, horror, historical adventure and boxing stories, often published in pulp magazines such as ‘Weird Tales.’ ‘The Scarlet Citadel, ‘ one of his notable Conan stories, showcases the richly imagined Hyborian Age, an era before recorded history filled with dark magic and dangerous adventures.
