This 1921 collection by Maugham contains what is perhaps his single most famous short story, ‘Rain, ‘ the tale of a South Seas missionary who becomes obsessed with a prostitute.  But there are other gems here, including ‘The Fall of Edward Barnard, ‘ in which the kernel of The Razor’s Edge may be discerned.

About the author

William Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was an English novelist and short story writer.  His work as a doctor brought him into contact with the lower class, about whom he was able to write so convincingly. The success of his novels and stories made him the highest paid author of the 1930s. His best-known works include The Razor’s Edge and Of Human Bondage.
