Fei Shu of the Song Dynasty compiled 112 officials from the Spring and Autumn Period to the end of the Tang Dynasty who are upright officials, have contributed to the society, and exercised benevolent governance to the common people, are compiled into the book Lian Li Biography. On the basis of Fei Shu, Huang Ruheng of the Ming Dynasty added 133 people before the Five Dynasties, and continued to compile 64 people from the Song and Yuan dynasties. It mainly records how they practiced integrity and governed for the people. Huang Ruheng rated these historical figures as upper, middle, and lower. He also added his own short comment at the end of each honest official”s deeds. In a few words, at most crosses, point out why the characters are worth emulating or where they appear to be narrow and inadequate.
