Born on January 2, 1803, in Baltimore, Maryland, Calvert was a descendant of the illustrious Calvert family, notable for their part in the founding of the state of Maryland. After his graduation in 1823, Calvert engaged in a breadth of scholarly activities, including serving as mayor of Newport, Rhode Island, and as editor of the “North American Review”.
