Joseph Rickaby, S.J., born in 1845, was an eminent British Jesuit philosopher and theologian, widely recognized for his contributions to moral theology and educational philosophy during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Rickaby was educated at Stonyhurst College, a prestigious Jesuit school in Lancashire, and subsequently joined the Society of Jesus. He continued his studies in philosophy and theology in Europe before returning to teach at Stonyhurst. Rickaby’s intellectual prowess was reflected in his fluency in various languages and extensive knowledge of classical literature. His scholarly pursuits led him to author ‘Moral Philosophy: Ethics, Deontology and Natural Law’ which is among his most impactful works, providing a cogent synthesis of ethical theories within the framework of Thomistic philosophy.
