Wolfgang Krege (1939-2005) wurde in Berlin geboren, wuchs dort auf und studierte später an der Freien Universität Philosophie. Er war Lexikonredakteur, Werbetexter und Verlagslektor. Ab 1970 war er auch als Übersetzer tätig (Anthony Burgess, Annie Proulx, Amélie Nothomb und viele andere). Große Bekanntheit erlangte er vor allem durch seine Übersetzungen der Texte von J.R.R. Tolkien (»Das Silmarillion «, »Der Hobbit«), besonders durch die Neuübersetzung des »Herrn der Ringe«.
